World’s Largest Steer Is in Montana!

Being a Montana resident, I have seen some very large steer on ranches across the state, but I have never seen a steer that stands half a foot taller than me and weighs almost TWO tons! Apparently, if you go to the O’Fallon Museum, in Baker, Montana, you can visit the WORLD’S largest steer…not the state’s largest steer…the WORLD’S! Oh, and, fittingly, his name is Steer Montana, and he would be 91 right now if he were still alive.

Steer Montana lived 15 years and four months and was born on a farm in the Fertile Prairie community, and was owned by Jack Guth. Recorded as the largest steer in the world, he weighed 3,980 pounds, stood 5’ 11” tall, was 10’ 4” long and had a girth of 9’ 2”. Old timers attributed his large size to the whiskey mesh that was a by-product of Mr. Guth’s still.

Jack Guth admitted that old story about the farmer who appeared with 17 kids and asked what it would cost if all went in and Jack said, “You can come in for free as I want the steer to see you,” was true.

The Longhorn Statue is actually part of the longhorn ballroom next door to the Mexican place mentioned in the tip (the sign is now gone). This is the club once owned by Jack Ruby, the shooter of Lee Harvey Oswald. It was also the site of a famous Sex Pistols concert in the 70's.
The mounted “Steer Montana” was purchased by Don Foote and displayed in his museum “Wonderland in Billings”. Bernie Heiser purchased the steer for $5,000 and brought it back to Baker. It can be seen at the Fallon County Museum.
